Everyone’s rehab experience is different. What works for one person may not work for another. However, some experiences seem to be universal across rehab. Below, we’ve cataloged some various bits of advice from residents at our substance abuse in Los Angeles facility. Many of these bits of advice were things they had wished someone told them before they arrived. At Carus Recovery, we take great pride in our community. When you’re trying to live a sober life, it can feel like you’re entirely alone. When you come here, our supportive community is ready to help.
What to Bring (Beyond the Essentials)
Obviously, you’re going to want to bring your ID, a debit/credit card, any prescription medication you might have, stuff like that. Others found that bringing a blank journal helped. That way, you could take notes on what you hear in your sessions, as well as write down any thoughts that you might have. Additionally, to help you collect your thoughts, some folks brought walking shoes, as well. Books are popular, but you don’t want to bring too many. Depending on your situation, several people have found comfort in pictures of loved ones. They can be an inspiration, displaying one more way that you’re worth it.
“Open,” “Honest,” “Willing”
Those are words that come up quite a bit when residents describe the right kind of attitude for recovery. Everyone can interpret those words as they see fit, but if you’re willing to try, then you could be amazed at what’s possible. “Remember, you can’t do it all by yourself,” is another phrase that came up quite a bit. “Don’t get ahead of yourself,” in different variations, comes up, too. “Stay in the moment,” “bring it back to the present” – those are also common phrases for centering one’s self. “Participate,” is another common phrase, too. That’s been used in the context of “participate in group discussions” as well as “participate” in the greater, overall Carus Recovery community. When you’re here, you’re a part of our community. When you leave, you’re still a part of the community, too.
“This is the Beginning”
That’s perhaps the commonly used phrase with Carus Recovery. When you come here, we can help you to develop the skills you’ll need to live a sober lifestyle once you step out of our facility. We do everything we can to help you to build a stronger foundation, so that you can live life on your terms, how you want, once you’re done here.
