As with anything else, when you get your child ready to go to a residential treatment center, you want to give them the best chance for success. That means that you want to get everything that you can in order ahead of time so that they have the best chance at getting the help they need to lead an ultimately sober and joyful life. We’ve helped so many young people (and not so young people) get help with substance abuse in Los Angeles, and there are some things you want to keep in mind as you prepare them.
Substance Abuse in Los Angeles: Tell Those Who Have to Be Told
There’s nothing easy about a child going to get help for substance abuse. Potentially, one particularly difficult part will be telling the people who have to know. That could mean other family members, if applicable. It also includes your child’s school. Telling the school is necessary, but, when possible, clear with your child ahead of time who they want to be told and who they don’t. That way, they can be as comfortable as possible while they are going through this very uncomfortable and difficult process.
Packing Clothes for Rehab
You want to pack light, yes, but you also want to make sure that your child has everything they need too. You certainly want them to have clothes: clothes that they’re comfortable in and that they feel good about wearing. Obviously, you want to be sure to clear out everything that has messages about drugs, alcohol, and so forth. A good rule of thumb here: when in doubt, keep it out.
Packing Everything Else for Rehab
If your child is a teenager (or really, any age) they’re going to want to look good, even if they’re in rehab. Personal hygiene products are important, as we’re more likely to feel good if we look good. However, you want to be sure to get personal hygiene products that don’t have any alcohol in them. Many teenagers have medications that they have to take, but to go into a rehab facility, they have to be non-narcotics. So, when it comes to these medications, you want to pack them as well as copies of the prescriptions for them too. That way, the medical staff can have those on file as well. Your kids are probably going to have some downtime, so reading materials (as well as a journal can be essential).
