A teenager with an addiction to drugs or alcohol is a true nightmare for parents. We’ll often get questions from parents asking us some version of “I worry that my child has a problem with substance abuse. How can I tell if they need to go to an alcohol or drug rehab Los Angeles?” Whenever possible, we recommend that parents look for the early warning signs. That way, they can potentially head off a further, worse problem.
“Kids Will Be Kids,” But…
We’ve all heard the phrase “kids will be kids.” You probably can’t keep your kid from ever experimenting with alcohol, but there are things you can do to tell if they’ve already tried or experimented with it. If you’ve discovered that they have, then you can sit them down and have a real, honest talk with them about it. Of course, when possible, we recommend that you do that once they reach a certain age so that you can set up clear routes of communication. Telling them your expectations of them and setting parameters can help, so long as you also accept that they’ll be kids too.
Drug Rehab in Los Angeles: Take a Close Look at Your Kids
One of the easiest ways to tell if your child has experimented with drugs or alcohol is to take a close look at them. If you suspect that they’ve come home from abusing drugs or alcohol with friends, have a close conversation with them when they come home. That doesn’t mean that you have to get into their face and start yelling at them, just have a conversation that requires both parties to maintain eye contact while you’re close to them. You’ll probably be able to tell if they’ve been smoking or drinking, as it will be on their breath, hair, and in their clothes. Even if your kids have done something to try and keep that smell from permeating everything, odds are that they haven’t done enough.
If your child has been experimenting with drugs or alcohol and you can’t smell anything (but you still suspect that they have) take a close look at their eyes. Are their pupils dilated, and are they having difficulty focusing on anything? That could be a clear sign that they’ve been drinking, especially if they also have flushed color to their cheeks as well. Combine that with a lack of motor skills (like stumbling and other clumsy behavior) and it could be a sign that they’ve been drinking.
